The Archenhold Observatory (Archenhold-Sternwarte) lies in the centre of Berlin's Treptower Park and is the oldest and largest public observatory in Germany. Its centrepiece is a 21-metre giant telescope that is still the longest movable refracting telescope in the world today. Built in 1896, the telescope continues to be used for special observation evenings during the winter. The observatory also uses modern Zeiss telescopes, with regular observations of the sun held in the so-called "Solar Physical Cabinet" during the summer months. Public observation events are very popular in any season, and the Zeiss Minor Planetarium explores the current starry sky no matter what the weather. The observatory also offers regular events for children.
Visitors to the exhibition space can also get an overview of the history of astronomy from its origins in ancient Babylon to our current day.
