The Archenhold Observatory in the middle of Treptower Park is the oldest and largest public observatory in Germany. Its centrepiece is the giant telescope built in 1896, which at 21 m focal length is the longest in the world.  It is still in use today and is used for special observations during the winter months.

Otherwise, the observatory uses modern Zeiss telescopes. In summer there are regular solar observations in the Solar Physics Cabinet. The public observations are popular in every season.

In the Zeiss Small Planetarium, the current starry sky is shown and explained in all weather conditions. Children's events are also held regularly. In the exhibition rooms you get an overview of the history of astronomy from its early beginnings in ancient Babylon to our own time.
