"The world in one garden" - that was the idea of director Adolf Engler when he had the Botanical Garden in Dahlem established at the turn of the 20th century. Today, the 43-hectare garden is one of the largest and most important in the world, with around 20,000 plant species.
It also includes 15 display greenhouses, the largest of which, the Great Tropical House, built in 1907, was renovated in 2009. A highlight of the garden is its plant-geographical layout: on one third of the entire garden area, a walk-through world map shows the natural vegetation of the temperate northern hemisphere.
The Botanical Museum, the only one of its kind in Central Europe, was founded in 1905 to complement the Botanical Garden. The valuable holdings of the former Royal Herbarium are stored here.
The exhibition areas are being extensively modernised and are expected to be closed until mid-2025.
