The Museum of Letters (Buchstabenmuseum) was founded in 2005 and is the first of its kind in the world. It is devoted to the preservation and documentation of typographic objects found in public and semi-public spaces. The museum collects individual letters, (advertising-) logos and pictograms in all sizes, shapes and materials. In addition to the objects themselves, the museum documents the emergence, production and history of letters, scripts and sign systems so as to explore their ongoing development. The museum's "display depot" showcases one part of the collection, and visitors are invited to examine the large letters and lettering, in particular. Many typographic signs and letters that have long since disappeared from the Berlin cityscape – but which remain familiar to Berliners – can be rediscovered here.
