The centre for learning and remembrance (Dokumentationszentrum Flucht, Vertreibung, Versöhnung) opened in the summer of 2021. The redesigned and listed "Deutschlandhaus" provides more than 5,000 square metres of space for permanent exhibitions, temporary presentations, a reading room and research areas. The functional building from the mid-1920s, inspired by Expressionism and in close vicinity to the Anhalter Bahnhof, has been connected to a striking new building.

The permanent exhibition, spread over two floors, focuses on the politically, ethnically and religiously motivated forced migrations in the 20th century in Europe and beyond. Six thematic clusters serve as an introduction and overview and present the causes, phenomena and consequences of forced migrations using numerous examples. On the second floor, the focus is on the displacement and expulsion of Germans in the European context of the history of World War II and Nazi policies of expansion, occupation and extermination and their subsequent integration in West and East Germany.

Media points allow visitors to research the Documentation Centre’s holding as well as external databases on family research. Audio and video documents of those affected are integrated into the exhibition. There is also an archive and a specialised scientific library. Their holdings can be accessed via a joint online catalogue, which the Documentation Centre maintains together with the German Historical Museum and the Allied Museum.
