The revolutionary wave of 1848/49 shook all of Europe. France, the German and Italian states, and Hungary were the main scenes. Many Berliners who took to the streets on March 18, 1848, for a better life were simple, bitterly poor and often young people. Apprentices, craftsmen and workers, including some women, were united by the courage to dedicate their lives to social improvements and freedom.

255 victims of the Berlin March Revolution are buried in this cemetery, which was created especially for them. The fallen barricade fighters are commemorated at the authentic site and at the same time two revolutions are remembered. For the victims of the 1918/19 revolution were also buried here.

Since 2018, the Cemetery of the March Fallen has been further developed as an exhibition and memorial site with Lotto funding. Thus, a new outdoor exhibition on the revolution of 1918/19, on memorials to the revolution of 1848/49 in Germany and in Europe as well as on the history of the cemetery up to the present could be realized.

The outdoor exhibition focuses on the eventful history of the Cemetery of the March Fallen and the revolution of 1918/19.In time for the "Weekend of Democracy," a new outdoor exhibition on the 1848/49 Revolution will open on March 18, 2023, the 175th anniversary of the 1848 Revolution in Berlin.

Two exhibition films and a digital level round out the museum's on-site offerings.
