A Nazi forced labour camp was located in Tegel-Süd from 1942 to 1945. It was run by a subsidiary of the Borsig company and, with a capacity of 1,500 people, was one of the largest camps in Berlin. "Eastern workers" - Russians, Ukrainians and Belarusians, and from 1943 also French and Italian military internees - were housed here and replaced the German workers who had been drafted as soldiers. Forced labourers also lived in the camp; 23 births of women from Eastern Europe are documented.
The camp buildings, stone witnesses to Nazi forced labour, were used after the war as a school, a girls' educational home and a gardening school. In 2010, a district memorial was created here, where ten concrete benches visualise these different uses. Since 2016, a former camp barrack has housed a museum that illustrates the well-documented history of the camp with documents, photographs and artefacts from the everyday life of the forced labourers.
The memorial is representative of the 140 known camps in Reinickendorf. In 1944, there were over 30,000 forced labourers in Reinickendorf, and around 400,000 in the whole of Berlin.
