Between 1951 and 1990, a remand centre (UHA) of the Ministry of the Interior was located in Keibelstraße in Berlin-Mitte. It was attached to the neighbouring Presidium of the People's Police and was the only East Berlin remand prison where women were also imprisoned.
From 1990, the lower floors served as a film set. The modernised cells on the sixth floor were used for police and deportation custody from 1992 to 1996.
In February 2019, the Keibelstraße place of learning opened here.
Since then, school classes and other groups (young people aged 14 and over) have been able to learn about the GDR's detention, legal and judicial system, about crime and criminalisation, and about GDR history at the authentic site. The learning site breaks new ground in interactive and media-supported educational work.
The content is not just about political prisoners and the Ministry for State Security (MfS). Different workshops deal with the various reasons for imprisonment, general prison conditions, the special circumstances of pre-trial detention and encourage people to think about the meaning and purpose of imprisonment in general.
