Between 1951 and 1990 a remand prison of the Ministry of Internal Affairs was located in Keibelstraße in Berlin-Mitte. It was attached to the neighbouring presidium of the Volkspolizei (National Police) and was the only East Berlin remand prison in which women were also arrested. From 1990 the lower floors were used as a film set. The modernized cells on the sixth floor were used for police and deportation custody from 1992 to 1996.
In February 2019 the education centre Keibelstraße opened here. Since then, school classes and other groups (young people from the age of 14) have been able to learn about the GDR's prison, legal and justice system, crime and criminalisation and GDR history at the authentic location. The location tests new methods of interactive and media-supported educational work. In terms of content, it is not only about political prisoners and the Ministry for State Security (MfS). Various workshops deal with the different reasons for imprisonment, general conditions of arrest, the special circumstances of pretrial detention and encourage the participants to reflect on the meaning and purpose of imprisonment. The learning workshop "Punks in the GDR", for example, explains the criminalisation of this youth culture by the state. Interviews with contemporary witnesses, song lyrics and photos from the scene help to introduce the topic.
