The listed building on Märkisches Ufer will be renovated in the coming years. Meanwhile, the Märkisches Museum will be closed.
The Märkische Provinzialmuseum was founded in 1874 by citizens interested in history. They were committed to collecting historical documents, deeds, coins, ecclesiastical works of art and objects of prehistory and early history from Berlin and the Mark Brandenburg.
From 1899 to 1908, city architect Ludwig Hoffmann built the impressive brick building at Köllnischer Park for the rapidly growing collection. As a virtuously staged ensemble, it quotes architectural models from northern Germany and the Mark Brandenburg. Rooms such as the Gothic chapel, the guild hall and the hall of arms effectively frame the exhibits on Berlin's art, culture and history.
In 2018, the permanent exhibition "BerlinZEIT" opened, which conveys defining moments of the city from the Ice Age to the present in an easy-to-understand and compact way on two floors.
