With half a million objects, the Münzkabinett (Numismatic Collection) is one of the largest in the world. Its beginnings date back to the art chamber of the Elector of Brandenburg. The collection includes outstanding, rare individual pieces and numerous closed series from the beginning of coinage in the 7th century BC to the coins of the 21st century.
The art form of the medal, which emerged in the 15th century, is represented by 25,000 pieces. The collection also includes paper money, historical seals and minting tools such as dies. In the Bode Museum, visitors first receive an introduction to the topics of coinage, coin value, forgeries, coin finds and the functions of coins. In three further rooms, selected coins from late antiquity to the present as well as medals are presented. The almost 4,000 pieces, many of them with portraits of rulers and depictions of major events, form a panorama of human history.
In the Altes Museum, 1300 Greek and Roman coins from the 7th century BC to the 3rd century AD are on display within the exhibition of the Collection of Classical Antiquities. The Münzkabinett is also represented in the Neues Museum with selected items from the collection, including the famous denarius with the portrait of Charlemagne.
