In 1759, the master needle maker Johann Christian Knoblauch had a prestigious three-storey corner house built in the Nikolai quarter in the late Baroque style. His son Carl Friedrich set up a cloth, white goods and silk shop on the first floor in 1798. The building is one of the few surviving 18th century town houses in Berlin.
During the redesign of the Nikolai quarter to celebrate Berlin's 750th anniversary, it was renovated in line with its listed status. In 1989, the house was turned into a museum with the support of the descendants of the Knoblauch family and has been part of the Berlin City Museum since 1995.
Berlin's Biedermeier period comes to life in the Knoblauchhaus. In the faithfully reconstructed living and business rooms, furniture, paintings, porcelain, photographs, letters and account books provide an insight into the life of the middle-class Knoblauch family. Several city councillors came from the family, as well as the builder of the New Synagogue in Oranienburger Straße, Eduard Knoblauch, and the founder of the Bohemian Brewery, Armand Knoblauch.
