The museum (Musikinstrumenten-Museum) collects and presents instruments of European art music from the 16th century to the present day and demonstrates their sound in concerts and guided tours. Around 800 of the almost 3,000 instruments in the collection, which was founded in 1888, are on display.
The collection of Naumburg wind instruments, the almost complete instrumentarium of a central German town pipe workshop from around 1600, is outstanding. The highlights also include early harpsichords and spinets, for example from the workshop of the Ruckers family, and the famous Bach harpsichord and its replicas.
Also on display are string instruments by European masters such as Stradivari, Gagliano, Stainer, Krouchdaler, woodwind instruments by Hotteterre, Denner, Quantz and others, a traveling harpsichord belonging to Queen Sophie-Charlotte of Prussia, and flutes by Frederick II, Carl Maria von Weber's fortepiano, an English church organ from the workshop of John Gray and the largest cinema and theater organ on the European continent, the four-manual "Mighty Wurlitzer", which is also regularly played in concerts.
