The Orangery Palace is closed until further notice due to renovation work as part of the master plan for the Prussian palaces and gardens.
The majestic palace (Orangerieschloss im Park Sanssouci) and the terraced grounds adorned with southern plants are an expression of Frederick William IV's love of Italy. They were built between 1851 and 1864 by Ludwig Persius, Friedrich August Stüler and Ludwig Ferdinand Hesse according to the king's designs. They were modeled on Italian villas and palaces.
The exotic potted plants of Sanssouci still overwinter in the 100-metre-long plant halls. The viewing platform between the towers of the central building offers a sweeping view of the landscape.
Inside, two royal apartments give an impression of 19th century courtly living culture. The rooms are furnished with sculptures by artists from the Berlin School of Sculpture, architectural ornamentation, historicist furniture and precious silk coverings.
The centerpiece of the entire palace complex is the Raphael Hall. The royal collection of around 50 copies of Raphael's paintings is presented in this skylit hall designed by Frederick William IV.
