The Science Center Berlin was opened in 2009 and features an eye-catching aluminium façade modelled on the structure of muscle fibres. The building is home to the capital-city offices of the medical technology company Ottobock. A public exhibition examining the theme of mobility covers three floors and focuses on walking and grabbing as key features of human development.
The exhibition uses interactive installations to acquaint visitors with the body's complicated musculoskeletal system. For example, people can use a light table to look under the skin and see which arm muscles are used in particular movements. Visitors can also use a wheelchair to navigate a virtual parcours course at the Brandenburg Gate and use a treadmill to experience what it means when our leg muscles and sense of balance get weaker as we get older. People can also consult a demographic column to calculate the statistical ratio for diseases such as diabetes, osteoarthritis, osteoporosis and strokes. The exhibition also explores how medical technology can learn from nature.
