Opposite the Pergamonmuseum, a temporary exhibition building for the time of the renovation of the Pergamon Altar presents the project "PERGAMON. Masterpieces of the Ancient Metropolis and 360° Panorama by Yadegar Asisi" - with highlights from the holdings of the Collection of Classical Antiquities and a panorama by the artist and architect Yadegar Asisi.
The panorama takes us back to the year 129 AD and shows the ancient city of Pergamon on the west coast of Asia Minor. The state of the city in the high Roman imperial period under the reign of Emperor Hadrian (117-138 AD) has been reconstructed in great detail. To this end, some 40 new scenes have been added to the first Pergamon panorama, which emerged in 2011/12 from an initial collaboration between the Collection of Classical Antiquities and Asisi. The exhibition of some 80 important works from the Collection of Classical Antiquities at Pergamon - including most of the Telephos frieze from the Pergamon Altar - is based on extensive restorations of the originals. With the exception of the statue of Athena Parthenos from the Pergamon Library on loan to the Metropolitan Museum of Art, all of the city's famous pictorial works, such as the so-called "Beautiful Head," the colossal head of Heracles, the portraits of the kings, the Dancer from the Palace, the Prometheus Group, and the Athena of the Cross, are on view.
Various installations offer artistic interpretations for a better understanding of the ancient world of life. Drawings by Yadegar Asisi deal with the sculptures, the architecture and the urban layout of Pergamon. As a synthesis of the arts, the panorama combines many years of archaeological and architectural research with the work of a contemporary artist. The presentation of the sculptures from the Pergamon Museum with the Asisi Panorama allows visitors to participate in the ancient world. The Pergamon Altar can be experienced in its original architectural context on the Acropolis.
