The PETRI Berlin Museum invites visitors to experience archaeology up close under the motto “Discover archaeology”.
Extensive excavations took place on Petriplatz between 2007 and 2009 as well as in 2015, providing important insights into the founding of the city and Berlin's medieval history. The PETRI, which was built on the remains of the foundations of a medieval Latin school, houses objects as well as the restoration workshops and magazine of the Museum of Prehistory and Early History and the State Monuments Office with a project room for presenting current excavations.
Starting with an “archaeological window” in the basement, which shows the medieval city structure, the exhibition presents the journey of a find - from excavation to cleaning and restoration to presentation in the exhibition. Transparent workshops provide an insight into the various steps required to preserve and conserve archaeological finds.
