The early baroque complex, picturesquely situated on the southern bank of the Havel, is the only palace from the time of the Great Elector Frederick William of Brandenburg that has survived in the Potsdam palace landscape. It originated from a country house that Frederick William gave to his second wife, Electress Dorothea.

From 1671, she had the building extended and transformed into a princely summer residence. Sumptuously furnished stately rooms such as the banqueting hall and luxurious apartments for the electoral couple were created. Caputh Palace experienced another glorious period under Frederick I, the first Prussian king.

After three centuries of varying use, the restoration of the house has brought back a unique example of Brandenburg-Prussian palace architecture. The original ceilings with their paintings and stucco work have been preserved in almost all the rooms.

The works of art on display, such as lacquered furniture, porcelain, faience, sculptures and paintings, convey an impression of courtly artistic development and princely living culture around 1700. The tiled hall in the basement, which Frederick William I had lined with more than 7,500 Dutch tiles around 1720, is remarkable.
