Glienicke Palace and Park (Schloss und Park Glienicke) are located in the far south-west of Berlin, close to the Glienicke Bridge. Prince Carl of Prussia acquired the estate in 1824 for himself and his future wife Marie of Saxe-Weimar. Under the influence of a trip to Italy, he had the existing buildings redesigned by Karl Friedrich Schinkel between 1824 and 1827.
First, the old billiard house on the banks of the Havel was converted into a casino with a view of the lake. This was followed in 1825-1827 by the transformation of the manor house into a neoclassical villa. A tower was added to the palace in 1832 and the lion fountain on the street side was added in 1838.
Peter Joseph Lenné, who had begun designing the Pleasure Grounds in 1816 under the previous owner Prince Hardenberg, was now able to complete his plans. He laid out the park with its wooded areas, meadows, streams and lakes. The courtyard between the palace wings is reminiscent of Italian gardens with its leafy arcades, antique sculpture fragments and exotic potted plants.
In addition to the magnificent Schinkel-style living rooms, Glienicke Palace has also been home to the Court Gardeners' Museum since 2006, which commemorates the famous gardeners in the service of the Hohenzollerns.
