Rheinsberg Palace (Schloss Rheinsberg), picturesquely situated on the shores of Lake Grienerick, was the crown prince residence of the future Prussian King Frederick the Great from 1736 to 1740. Frederick William I acquired the country estate for his eldest son in 1734 after his marriage to Elisabeth Christine von Braunschweig-Bevern.

Georg Wenzeslaus von Knobelsdorff extended the building into a three-winged complex and designed the interior in the early Rococo style. The crown prince created a court of the muses here, where he could devote himself to his philosophical, literary and artistic interests far away from Berlin.

After his accession to the throne, Frederick gave the palace to his brother Heinrich. The prince, a diplomat of European standing, continued the tradition of the court of the muses in splendor from 1752. The Frederician park was extended and transformed into one of the earliest sensitive landscape gardens in Germany.

The renovations that Henry carried out to his residence over half a century came to a crowning conclusion with the furnishing of the parade rooms and the summer apartment as early neoclassical works of interior art. Among other things, the magnificent Hall of Mirrors has been preserved from Frederick's time as crown prince.
