In 1793, Frederick William II of Prussia acquired the Peacock Island with its 400 or so old oak trees. A year later, he had a country pleasure palace built there for himself and his mistress Wilhelmine Encke, who later became Countess Lichtenau, in the line of sight to the New Garden. The timber-framed building clad with wooden planks looks like the romantic backdrop of a ruin.

In contrast, the magnificent early neoclassical interior is surprising. It is largely original and conveys an authentic picture of courtly living culture around 1800.

The island retained its original character under Frederick William II. Only the immediate surroundings of the palace were landscaped and a neo-Gothic dairy was built at the opposite end of the island.

Frederick William III and his wife, Queen Luise, used the palace as a summer residence. From 1818, Peter Joseph Lenné was commissioned to transform the island into a landscape garden. A number of other buildings were added, such as the Palm House, which burned down in 1880, and the Cavalier House by Karl Friedrich Schinkel. A menagerie was created in the middle of the island, which later formed the basis of the Berlin Zoological Garden.
